The Drugstore Mascara Edit

When it comes to mascara I’ve stuck with the drugstore for a while now.  Sure there are some high-end versions I’ve used and loved, I’m thinking Dior, Chanel and Clinique here, but in all honesty I think the drugstore offers everything you would want in a mascara and it’s so much cheaper.

I have some specific preferences though:

  1. I want a mascara that does it all – curls, thickens and lengthens my lashes;
  2. I prefer a plastic wand as I find it grips my lashes better;
  3. I don’t do waterproof versions (unless I really have to) as I just find it so hard to take off;
  4. I don’t like a formula that is too wet as I find it can smudge.  I think if the consistency is a bit thicker it has better grip;
  5. I don’t like anything too gimmicky (I’m thinking double ended with primers etc…..just not my thing);
  6. Lastly it’s black mascara all the way!

I have 5 mascaras that fulfil these requirements to talk to you about and from top to bottom below is the L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara.  This was my first drugstore mascara love and is something I will always come back to.  As its name suggests, this is packed with a multitude of bristles which effectively coat all of your lashes.  I find it very easy to build up, it doesn’t clump and it makes my lashes look super long and voluminous.

The Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara has somewhat of a cult status.  The wand is super thick but if I’m not careful it can smudge on my upper eyelid.  It’s probably just my haphazard ways but I have to be that extra bit careful with this one.  That said, I can’t fault the thickness this gives to the lashes.  Does it look like I’m wearing false lashes with this one?  Hmmm….probably not, but pretty close.

The Volum Rocket Express Mascara by Maybelline was an impulse buy and is quite similar in effect to the Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara.  Whilst I don’t really like the packaging, this doesn’t clump and the volume and thickness this gives to the lashes is impressive.

The Maybelline Lash Sensational Lash Multiplying Mascara is a new one I am using that I am really enjoying.  I don’t normally go for curved wands but I have to say this one just works in every way.  It coats each and every lash and gives a beautiful fanned out effect making your eyes look wider.

Lastly is the L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes So Couture Mascara.  This is a part of the L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes family but has a liquid black silk formula.  To me that translates as a slightly wetter formula than what I prefer and I find that the effect is not as dramatic as all the others, but this still gives good natural volume and curl to the lashes.

If I was to pick my favourite then it would be the Maybelline Lash Sensational Lash Multiplying Mascara followed very closely by the L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara as they are both just all rounders in terms of curl, length and volume.  A little tip though, if you don’t do so already I highly recommend the use of an eyelash curler beforehand, it really does make all the difference and I’ve done a post on this here.

So, have you ever tried any of these before?   Or, which mascara are you currently loving? x

  • Ahhh, your photos are just so pretty! I love them and could spend all day looking through your posts!!!

    Love these picks – have you tried the YSL Faux Cils Effet Mascara? It’s beautiful but not a drugstore product! 🙂

    • Thank you so much. I haven’t tried this YSL one but I do dip in and out high end mascaras so maybe I’ll give this a try at some point xx

  • Heard so much about Max Factor’s mascara, should give it a go when I visit London next week! Wanted to ask you have you tried the Maybelline Lash Sensational then saw it hiding right at the corner of the pink petal. Silly me 🙂

    • Ha never mind, the Lash Sensational is currently what i am using the most, it’s fab xx

  • The Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara is hands down the best drug store mascara I’ve ever used (from the UK, anyway!). Though I have just purchased quite a few high-end mascaras to try out I have a feeling that Maybelline’s offering will still come out on top!

    • Although I use all of the ones I mentioned, the Lash Sensational is what I am currently using the most. It gives such a great curl x

  • Annie

    I LOVE Maxfactor False Lash Effect, I’ve been using it for years and always have one tucked away. Anniewritesbeauty.co.uk xx

  • I tried most of these mascaras before I went cruelty free! I don’t think you can really beat a good drugstore mascara, especially as they’re so cheap you can afford to experiment a bit 🙂

    I actually just came across your blog from seeing one of your pictures on Instagram, I think your photography is absolutely beautiful and a vibrant breath of fresh air from all the generic white flat lays, so I just love it!! I have followed you on bloglovin and look forward to more posts 🙂

  • I’m also currently trying the Maybelline lash sensational mascara! I also am enjoying i; although I do with it was a slightly drier formula. That’s just me being picky though!

    I’ve never had good luck with drugstore mascara, but now I’m inspired to try one of these! I’ll definitely be picking up one of the L’Oreal options. xx

    Champagne Daydream

    • I like high end mascaras but for quite a while now I’ve just been sticking to drugstore as they work for me. The L’Oreal one would be a good one to try xx

  • When I find a mascara that works I usually stick to that and don;t experiment with other very much, but these all sound like great options. I definitely need to check out the two L’Oreal options as I like the wands too x

    If I had to take one think to an island, it would be mascara! lol I am really picky with my mascaras and the Loreal Volume Million Lashes is a really good one. But I never tried the Maybelline one, but I read some great reviews on it! I really want to try it out!

    Great Post, thanks for sharing! 🙂

    • I like all of these mascaras. The Lash Sensational is a good one to try if you haven’t done so already xx

  • Sinéad Danielle

    Totally agree that needing a mascara that does it all is the way forward! Who has time to layer up with different mascaras?! I agree with you – drugstore ones tend to do the job pretty well! I’m a huge fan of Maybelline’s Colossal Go Extreme, it really volumises my lashes!

    Your photos are so beautiful btw!

    Sinéad xo ♥ fabuleuse, toujours ♥

    • Thanks so much. I must try that mascara next, it sounds great x

  • Wow.. mascara overload lol..
    I’m that someone who loves mascara and just like you, I want it to have all the features in one. But additionally, I’d like it most if it’s waterproof. I think waterproof mascara is the one for me cos I always messed up with non waterproof ones hihi

    xoxo

    • I don’t mind waterproof but just find it a pain to take off. Having a mascara that does it all is so important I think xx

  • Amanda Maria

    obsessing over your blog photography! great post I love drugstore mascaras so many good finds. The maybelline Rocket is awesome!

    amanda-speroni.blogspot.ca/

  • I absolutely adore the Maybelline lash sensational mascara! It’s funny because I always was a higher end mascara buyer, but lately I rather save my money for other products. xo

    Kelsey | http://www.abalancingpeach.com

    • I really like this mascara too and agree when it comes to mascara I’d much rather save my money because I don’t really use any mascara longer than 2 months! x

  • I haven’t tried any of these mascaras yet! I have the L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes and the Maybelline Lash Sensational in my drawer but I have so many mascaras open already that I’ve decided to use those first.

    Your photography is amazing! Followed ;)x

  • I like drugstore mascaras as well, I feel like they perform pretty much the same as high end…though I’m eager to try the benefit roller mascara! I love the L’oreal million lashes one a lot- there’s lots of mixed reviews but it works well for me!

  • The Sunday Mode

    Really keen to try that Lash Sensational mascara, so many people seem to be loving it and it sounds like a good all rounder mascara.

    http://www.thesundaymode.blogspot.com.au

  • Victoria Nightingale

    I’ve only ever tried the Maxfactor mascara, but it’s one that I always end up going back to. Currently I love Roller Lash, because it really does curl lashes well and I love the plastic wand. The only downside is it’s not so good for volume like False Lash Mascara is for example x

    vvnightingale.com

    • I suppose the Max Factor one is an award winner for a reason, it makes your lashes look so thick x

  • Ah we seem to have the same taste in drugstore mascara. My current favourite is the L’Oreal telescopic, I’ve actually been using it for quite a while. Every now and then I venture off but I always end up buying it again!

    Sally ~ DiagonSally

    • I have heard great things about this one, but never tried it, it does sound great x

  • Danielle Beautyblog

    Love the Max Factor False Lash Effect! Their Clump Defy (purple tube) version is pretty great too! I really like Maybellines mascaras too, especially Colossal and Falsies! I only use waterproof though!

    • Max Factor is liked by so many I think, and with good reason. I’ll have to try these other ones you mention next time. xx

  • andrea garcia

    Great post! Need some of these!!!

  • I love Maybelline Rocket mascara – one of my first drugstore mascaras too! Such a good post x

    Lucy | http://www.foreverseptemberr.blogspot.co.uk

  • These are great mascaras! There are many options in drugstore and some of them are really good! I do for the same preferences as most of the time it leads me to a perfect mascara 🙂 I’ve been enjoying using Max Factor masterpiece! Great review! xx

    http://www.elabellaworld.com

    • I agree,the drugstore have so many affordable varieties and for someone like me who likes to rotate my mascaras very often, it’s perfect xx

  • Thank you. I agree, from time to time I get tempted to find something new, as you can tell I have 5 on rotation! The Lash Sensational Mascara really is good i really like the formula too xx

  • Well maybe I might just be swayed – I just struggle with anything gimmicky! x

  • I tend to use high end mascaras because I’ve never found one in the drugstore to match up to my fave high end ones and I find that they are pretty pricey anyway so for a few quid more, I can have the one I want. Having said that, I want to try Falsify from Seventeen because I’ve only heard great things about it! xx

    Beautylymin

    • Agree, if you find something you like then it is worth it. I haven’t heard of the one from Seventeen before, must try that one next! x

  • I currently have the Lash Sensational mascara on rotation at the moment and it is a gem 🙂 The False Lash Effect one just did nothing for me, sadly 🙂 x

    Brenda BusyBee

    • Yeah really like the Lash Sensational one, normally it takes me a while to warm up to a mascara if that makes sense but with this on first application i knew it was going to be a good one! xx
